About Memorial Stadium

Tom Osborne Field at Memorial Stadium is the name for the playing surface and stadium for the Nebraska Cornhuskers college football team. The stadium is located on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus in Lincoln, Nebraska and is also known as “The Sea of Red”. While the field has been used for a variety of special events, its primary purpose is to serve as the home venue for the Nebraska Cornhuskers football program.

The venue was originally built in 1923 at a cost of $450,000 with a capacity of 31,080 to replace Nebraska Field, which was the Cornhuskers home turf from 1909 – 1922. The first game played at the new stadium was a 24-0 sweep when Nebraska defeated Oklahoma on October 13, 1923.

Since then, the stadium has been expanded and renovated multiple times raising its capacity and making it more comfortable for guests and sports commentators. But despite the current capacity limit of 85,458, record attendance has seen the stadium ho9ld over 90,000 visitors especially for larger events. In fact, Nebraska has sold out an NCAA-record 389 consecutive games at the stadium, which is a streak that dates back to 1982.

Team Summary

The Nebraska Cornhuskers football team are an NCAA Division I football team representing the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the West Division of the Big Ten conference. The team plays their home games at Memorial Stadium and have a record of selling out every game played there since 1962.

The team was first founded in 1890 and is easily one of the most storied football program histories in the NCAA. The team also holds the record of holding the eighth-most all-time victories among FBS teams. They have won over 45 conference championships, five national championships, and six other national championships which the school does not claim. The team easily earns its reputation as one of the best in College Football history.

On top of this, the team has fielded several legendary players who went on from the university to make their mark on college and professional football. This includes Heisman Trophy winners Johnny Rodgers, Mike Rozier, and Eric Crouch, as well as twenty-two other Cornhuskers who have earned their place in the College Football Hall of Fame. Notable players among them include Bob Brown, Guy Chamberlin, Tommie Frazier, Rich Glover, Dave Rimington, and Will Shields, and coaches Bob Devaney and, of course, Tom Osborne, who the playing field is named after.

But what sports historians are surprised by is how early the program found success. Because the team went undefeated for five seasons and thirty-four consecutive games between 1900-1916, which is still a record for the program. Further, the team had twenty-one conference championships in thirty-three seasons.

Achievements

Over the course of the team’s history, it has accrued a massive collection of winning seasons, titles, and a stunning bowl game record. It would take hours to recount every single success though, so here is a brief snapshot into their history and achievements.

  • All-time record 912–417–40 (.681)
  • Bowl record 26–27 (.491)*
  • Claimed national titles 5 (1970, 1971, 1994, 1995, 1997)
  • Unclaimed national titles 6
  • Conference titles 46
  • Division titles 10

*The exceptional part of Nebraska’s bowl game record is that it includes a consistent record of appearances at the bowl game level. For example, the program has an NCAA-record thirty-five straight appearances from 1969-2003 with a record of 26-27.
